Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Why should I wear braces?
A1. The obvious reason is to improve your smile. Another reason is to correct your malocclusion ("bad bite"). Straight teeth are not only more esthetic but are also easier to keep clean.

Q2. When should I visit the orthodontist?
A2. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children should see an orthodontist at age 7. Some forms of orthodontic treatment can only be used before all of the permanent teeth erupt. If early treatment is not needed, the child can be seen at regular intervals to best determine the most appropriate time for treatment to begin. It's never to late to have a beautiful smile!

Q3. How long will my treatment last?
A3. Expect treatment to last from 18 to 36 months depending on your individual needs. If you keep your appointments, care for your braces and practice good oral hygiene, you stand a better chance of completing the treatment early.

Q4. What can I expect on my first visit?
A4. At your complimentary initial visit, you can meet our staff and ask any questions. One x-ray will be taken, and Dr. Tim will determine a course of treatment and an estimate of the treatment duration. The cost of treatment and our affordable payment plan will be explained.

Q5. How long does it take to put on the braces?
A5. It depends on the case but usually one to two-and-half hours.

Q6. Will my braces hurt?
A6. Your mouth is usually sore the first week after you get your braces and, of course, when they're tightened. Modern, cast, low profile brackets are designed to minimize your pain between visits to the orthodontist.

Q7. Do I need to do anything special the first week or so?
A7. Yes, while you're getting used to the braces eat soft foods. Your gums and teeth will appreciate it. Also be extra careful when it comes to your mouth because it will be tender.

Q8. Will braces cause sores?
A8. They may at first. Just rinse the sores in warm salt water, and they'll heal within a week or two.

Q9. Can I play sports?
A9. Absolutely! Just wear an orthodontic mouth guard.

Q10. Can I still chew gum with braces?
A10. Gum is really not a good idea because it sticks to your braces, and the sugar gets trapped and can cause cavities. Even non-stick, sugar free gum should not be chewed while wearing braces.

Q11. What other foods should I avoid?
A11. Stay away from hard, sticky, gooey or crunchy foods. If food is too hard to chew, it could cause a bracket to come off.

Q12. What happens if a bracket comes off or is loose?
A12. Call the office to let us know that a bracket or band is off or loose. A longer appointment will be necessary to repair the bracket or band.

Q13. Do I need to brush more with braces?
A13. Continue to brush after every meal and before you go to bed. Floss as often as you can, but at least floss thoroughly once a per day. Flossing is especially important to remove plaque that can become trapped between the teeth.

Q14. Why do patients wear rubber bands?
A14. The rubber bands ("elastics") are used to correct your bite. You will be instructed on how to wear your rubber bands.

Q15. What happens if I don't wear the rubber bands when advised?
A15. The orthodontic treatment time can be extended, and the result can be compromised.

Q16. Will I need to wear a retainer?
A16. Yes! Retainers keep your teeth straight after the braces come off. Without them, your teeth will move, and the entire treatment could be jeopardized.
